Joyful January Day #16: Enjoy Your Food

Slow down and enjoy your food

Oh the colours and the flavours... it's making my mouth water just remembering eating this!

Eat slowly and taste the difference

What are you thinking about as you sit to eat? Do you even sit to eat or do you tend to grab and go? When you eat are you focused on the meal or something else? Do you tend to eat slowly or quickly?

A number of years ago I travelled around a lot of schools for work and I noticed just how many people either ate on the move, wolfed their food down or ate while they worked. It didn't seem such a healthy way to enjoy food, more like ticking off just another thing to do. What happens when we slow down and enjoy our food a little more?

Digestion begins in the mouth so taking time to chew our food properly is more than just good manners, it is helping us start the process of breaking our food down so we can get the nutrients from it. Chewing our food also makes it easier for our stomach to do it's job, it reduces the stress on our digestive system.

When we eat slowly, chewing and tasting our food, we get to appreciate the textures of the food and the different flavours. It actually helps us get more goodness from what we eat and we don't tend to overeat because we are tuned in to our body and the signals it is sending us.

Enjoying a meal by eating slowly is a way to show appreciation for the meal that has been prepared for us (even if it we were the chef!) and the ingredients that make up our meal. Sitting down to enjoy a meal also gives us the opportunity to take a break from the stream of thoughts and doing things. We all deserve a little break now and then.

I know when I eat slowly I enjoy the flavours more, I notice when I feel satisfied, I feel happier and healthier, and I make better decisions about the food I eat too. I also enjoy the company of those I am eating with as well.

Eating mindfully is just another way to help us tune in to our bodies and focus on nurturing (and nourishing) ourselves. What a great habit to start now, if you don't already, and keep going for the year.

“Refrain from discussing subjects that can destroy your awareness of the people around you and the food. If someone is thinking about something other than the good food on the table, such as his difficulties in the office or with friends, it means he is losing the present moment and the food. You can help by returning his attention to the meal.”
